We’re coming down to the final preparations for the Tropicana implosion at 2:30 am on October 9. We’ve got all the details and where you can watch this historic event.
Implosion Details
“Bally’s and the Oakland A’s are set to host a commemorative event on the morning of October 9, featuring a spectacular 555 drones and fireworks display by Fireworks by Grucci concluding with the implosion of the Tropicana slated for 2:30 a.m.,” according to a Bally’s spokesperson.
Implosions are done in the early morning hours to prevent dust and traffic disruptions during regular hours.
💥Both 23-story towers are coming down in a single implosion when they ignite 2,190 pounds of explosives. The towers will be nothing but rubble in 22 seconds.
Where to Watch the Tropicana Implosion
For safety reasons, there will be no public viewing area for the implosion. So how can you see it?
Live Streaming Coverage
The local news stations, including Fox5, are livestreaming it for residents. KLAS has online streaming on 8newsnow.com and on channel 8 locally.
You can also watch on these live streams:
- Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority on X
- Ballylive.com and the Bally Live app
Oyo Hotel
The Oyo Hotel has the best view across Tropicana Avenue from the implosion, but rates start at $350 and go up to $724/night for the Strip view rooms, and they require a 2-night stay! Ugh – that’s pricey!
MGM Grand, NY NY & Excalibur
These MGM Properties have no availability.
Implosion Watch Parties
There is a Tropicana implosion party hosted around the site. The Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay is hosting a party with doors opening at 10:30pm on October 8.
General admission was $50, but it’s sold out now.
Parking Garages?
Some people have mused about paying for parking at MGM Grand self-parking garage and then sitting in their car and watching the implosion from there.
I would caution against trying that since hotels may be concerned about liability or safety concerns, they probably won’t allow people into the parking garage at the time of the implosion.
Exclusion Zone
There is an exclusion zone around the site that includes Las Vegas Blvd from Park Blvd to in front of Luxor and on top from the NYNY parking garage to just past OYO. No one will be allowed inside this area.
This includes all surrounding pedestrian bridges – no one will be allowed to stand on the pedestrian bridges in the exclusion zone.
People staying in the local hotels cannot exit the doors leading into the exclusion zone. There will be security and police posted. No hotel is completely shut out. Excalibur and OYO are likely the most affected, but access should still be provided from the rear of the resort.
“We look at the explosives that we’re going to detonate, the type of explosives and the quantity of explosives, and we calculate what is called the noise level,” the president of the Controlled Demolition Inc., Mark Loizeaux, says.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) prescribes guidelines on the noise levels that workers and the public should be exposed to without hearing protection. The noise level determines how far out the implosion’s exclusion zone must be.
“CDI designs the exclusion zone going along public streets, rights of way, fences, things like that, that are easy for Metro police to enforce,” Loizeaux explains.
