Tallest Building in Las Vegas

Las Vegas has an impressive skyline. From replicas of world wonders, like the Eiffel Tower, to the High Roller, observation towers, and impressive skyscrapers, it is easy to be impressed with the sights of the Las Vegas skyline.

With every new project, developers strive to become one of the tallest buildings in Las Vegas. Each new development tends only to hold the title for a short period of time until the next comes in with the latest in engineering.

It is quite a feat to take on as the buildings rise higher and higher. However, this is great for the visitors to Las Vegas because it means that you get to take advantage of the views of majestic Las Vegas from high above the ground.

The Quest for the Tallest Building in Las Vegas

The Quest for the Tallest Building in Las Vegas

We have done the research and have found which buildings in Vegas are the tallest, but before we elaborate, it is important to note that according to the United States Postal Service, the Las Vegas city limits includes the Las Vegas Valley smaller suburbs of Paradise, Winchester, and Spring Valley. The tallest structure is on the Las Vegas Strip, but there is plenty of height in the surrounding communities.

There are many technicalities when it comes to naming the tallest of the buildings in Las Vegas, so we will do our best to clarify as we go. Let’s take a look at the tallest buildings in Vegas, what they offer, and who’s in competition for the tallest of the Las Vegas skyline.

The Strat – 1,149 feet

The Strat Hotel in Las Vegas

The Strat is a hotel, casino, and Skypod on the Las Vegas Strip. It has over 2,400 newly renovated hotel rooms, restaurants, attractions like thrill rides and a top-notch casino, and a seemingly never-ending list of amenities.

The Strat was opened in 1996 and has since been a favorite of locals and tourists alike as one of the famous Las Vegas high-rise hotels.

The Strat  Tower is often called the tallest building in Las Vegas; however, there is a caveat. The Strat stands 1,149 feet tall, far above any of the other buildings in Las Vegas, but isn’t fully habitable. Since it is not habitable, it is not technically the tallest functioning building. By definition, only fully habitable buildings can claim such the distinction.

Though it is not the tallest hotel tower, it does take the title of the tallest observation tower in Las Vegas. It is also the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States and one of the tallest freestanding observation towers in the world.

JW Marriott Las Vegas Boulevard – 735 feet

JW Marriott Las Vegas Boulevard

JW Marriott Las Vegas Boulevard is located on the Las Vegas Strip. Many might know it as Fontainebleau or The Drew, but it is now under the Marriott brand. It is an unfinished hotel that began construction in 2007.

After the 2008 recession, developers placed the construction on hold, and the property fell into bankruptcy. It was restarted later after being bought out of bankruptcy with a completion date of 2022, but COVID-19 has now pushed the date until 2023.

When it opens, the JW Marriott is expected to have over 3,700 hotel rooms, large meeting and convention spaces, convenient amenities, and onsite dining, shopping, spa, and casino.

The JW Marriot will stand 735 feet tall, surpassing the current titleholder of Las Vegas’ tallest building.  So even though the building itself is already the tallest building constructed in Las Vegas, it will not hold the official title until it is habitable.

Resorts World – 673 feet

Resorts World in Las Vegas

Resorts World is one of the newest hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. It has 57 floors, almost 1,500 modern rooms with onsite nightlife, restaurants, casino, spa, the largest pool complex on the Las Vegas Strip, and much more. It opened June 24, 2021, and set records with its opening.

When Resorts World opened, it became the tallest completed building in Las Vegas, standing at 673 feet. Though the height is lower than some of the other buildings on this list because it is fully operational and habitable. According to definitions, it is the tallest building in Las Vegas at the current time.

Once the others that we have talked about open, Resorts World will then lose its title of the tallest fully habitable building, but it will always remain as one of the tallest buildings in Las Vegas.
